Language Requirements
Review the available English language requirements by study level.
General English / IELTS
Most universities ask for IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, often with a minimum of 6.0 in each band. Competitive programmes can ask for 7.0 or more. Many universities also accept TOEFL iBT, Duolingo or PTE, but this differs by school. IRCC does not set a fixed language test rule for the study permit itself, though a strong English score supports your study plan. Language requirements also apply to the post-graduation work permit, so aim high from the start.
Bachelor Language Requirement
For Bachelor’s programs, international students typically need an IELTS score of 6.0 to 6.5, a TOEFL iBT score of 80 to 90, or a PTE Academic score of 58 to 60. Some universities may also accept Cambridge English exams like CAE or CPE.
Master's Language Requirement
For Master’s programs, the required IELTS score is 6.5 to 7.0, TOEFL iBT is 90 to 100, and PTE Academic is 60 to 65. Specific program requirements may vary, so checking with each university is essential.
Admission Requirements for Bangladeshi Students in Canada
Canadian universities set their own admission rules, and Bangladeshi applicants are treated as international students. Requirements depend on your degree level, programme, province and previous qualifications. Ontario undergraduate applications usually go through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC), while Master's applications go directly to each university.
Academic Qualifications
Bachelor's: You need a recognised upper-secondary qualification such as the HSC with strong results in relevant subjects. Some universities ask for extra subjects, supplementary forms or additional test scores, so check the Bangladesh requirements on the university website. Many Ontario programmes close in January, and other provinces use different dates. Master's: You need a recognised Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, usually with a strong CGPA. Research-based programmes may ask you to find a supervisor before you apply, and some programmes ask for a GRE or GMAT score, a statement of purpose and references. Deadlines for fall entry often fall between December and March.

Study Gap Acceptability
A study gap is not an automatic rejection, but visa officers and admission teams look closely at it. Support your gap with evidence such as employment letters, training or internship certificates, volunteer work or business documents. Explain in your statement of purpose how the time built your skills and why you have chosen this programme now. Shorter and well-documented gaps are easier to justify than long unexplained ones.

Many are automatic with your application, but amounts and rules differ.

How to Apply for a Canada Student Visa from Bangladesh
For studies longer than six months, Bangladeshi students need a Canadian study permit, and Canada also issues a visitor visa with it. The fast-track Student Direct Stream ended on 8 November 2024, so all Bangladeshi applicants now use the regular study permit process. Start early, because the application needs several documents and checks.
Your study visa application roadmap
- Receive your letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
- Get your Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) if required. Most undergraduate and college applicants need one, and Quebec uses the CAQ in its place. Master's and doctoral students at public institutions are exempt from the PAL under the 2026 rules.
- Prepare your documents, including proof of funds, a study plan and your medical exam from an IRCC-approved panel physician.
- Apply online through your IRCC account and pay the CAD 150 application fee.
- Give your biometrics after you receive your biometrics instruction letter. The fee is CAD 85.
- Wait for the decision. If approved, you receive a letter of introduction and a visa, and you collect your study permit when you arrive in Canada.
Required Student Visa Documents
• Valid passport • Letter of acceptance from a DLI • PAL or CAQ, if required for your programme and province • Proof of funds covering first-year tuition, CAD 23,448 for living expenses (2026 level for a single applicant outside Quebec) and return travel • Study plan or statement of purpose • Academic documents and English test results, if you have them • Medical exam result from a panel physician • Police certificate, if requested • Recent photographs and completed application forms Proof of funds can include bank statements, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), proof of tuition and housing payments, and a sponsor's documents. A GIC is no longer required for Bangladeshi applicants now that the fast-track stream has ended, but it remains an accepted way to show funds.
Visa Interview Tips
Canada does not usually run a standard interview for study permits, but officers can request one, so be ready to explain your plans. • Know your study programme. Be able to say why you picked this course and university. • Understand your finances. Know who pays for tuition and living costs, and keep clear proof of the source of funds. • Keep your answers consistent. Your documents, study plan and replies should tell the same story and show that you plan to leave Canada when your permit ends.
Visa Processing Time
Processing time changes often, so use the processing times tool on the IRCC website before you apply. Allow several weeks to a few months and apply as soon as you have your acceptance. Biometrics are given at a Canada Visa Application Centre in Dhaka, and your biometrics instruction letter lists the details. Decisions are made by IRCC, not by the High Commission of Canada in Dhaka, so track your case through your IRCC account.

Common Questions About Studying in Canada
01Is Canada expensive for Bangladeshi students?
Canada costs more than many other study destinations. Expect average international tuition of about CAD 24,000 a year for graduate programmes or CAD 41,700 for undergraduate programmes, plus living costs of about CAD 1,500–3,000 a month. Studying in a smaller city, getting a scholarship or joining a funded research programme can lower costs.
02Can I work while studying in Canada?
Yes. Full-time students can work up to 24 hours a week off campus during term and full-time during scheduled breaks. Rules on on-campus work and hours can change, so check the current IRCC rules and never exceed your limit, because it can put your permit and future applications at risk.
03When should Bangladeshi students apply to Canadian universities?
For fall 2027, start preparing now. Many Ontario undergraduate applications close in January 2027, and Master's deadlines usually fall between December and March. Apply for your study permit as soon as you receive your acceptance and PAL or CAQ.
04Do I need a Provincial Attestation Letter?
Most undergraduate and college applicants need a PAL from the province, and Quebec uses the CAQ. Master's and doctoral students at public institutions are exempt under the 2026 rules. Your university can tell you which applies to you.
05Is IELTS compulsory for Canadian universities?
Most universities ask for IELTS Academic or an accepted alternative. Some waive the requirement in certain cases, so read the language page for your programme.
06Can I stay in Canada after graduation?
Graduates of eligible programmes can apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) of up to three years. Programme, institution and language conditions apply, and the rules change from time to time. A PGWP does not guarantee permanent residence, so check IRCC for current options.
07Is a scholarship guaranteed if I have good grades?
No. Scholarships are limited and competitive, and many cover only part of your costs. Apply with a strong profile and keep a backup plan for tuition.
